Verso is an offline-first book inventory app. It has no account, no login, no analytics, no advertising, and no tracking. All of your data stays on your device. To look up book details, the app contacts public book catalog services using the ISBN or title text you provide. For the optional one-time Verso Pro purchase, it also uses a purchase-management service. The camera is used on your device to read a book's barcode, and, if you choose, to read an ISBN or cover text from a photo you take.
We do not collect, store, or transmit your personal data to any server we operate. We do not operate a server. There is no Verso account.
Everything you add (books you own, your wishlist, books you have passed on, and any notes) is stored locally on your device only. Backups you create (CSV or JSON export) are written to a location you choose and are under your control.
The app requests camera permission to scan a book's barcode (for example the ISBN on the back cover). The camera feed is processed on your device to decode the barcode and is not stored, uploaded, or sent anywhere. If you use the optional photo capture (part of Verso Pro) to read an ISBN or the text on a cover, that photo is processed on your device by on-device text recognition and is not uploaded or sent anywhere. You can also enter an ISBN by hand or search by title text instead of using the camera.
When you scan or enter an ISBN, or search by title text, the app sends that ISBN or search text to two third-party catalog services to retrieve book details and cover images:
What reaches these third parties is the book identifier (ISBN) or the title text you searched, an app User-Agent string (which may include the developer contact versoapp55@gmail.com so the catalog operator can reach the developer), and, as with any internet request, your device's IP address. We do not control these services. Their handling of these requests is governed by their own privacy policies:
We do not send your stored library, wishlist, notes, or any personal identifier to these services. Only the identifier or text needed for the specific lookup is sent.
Verso offers one optional purchase: a single, one-time "Verso Pro" unlock. There is no subscription and no account. The purchase itself is processed by the App Store or Google Play; we never receive or store your payment or billing details.
To check and restore whether you own Pro, the app uses RevenueCat, a purchase-management service. On the mobile app, Verso contacts RevenueCat each time the app starts (to see whether Pro is active on your device) and when you view or make the purchase. RevenueCat receives a randomly generated identifier for your install (not your name, email, or your Verso library), your Pro purchase status, and, as with any internet request, your device's IP address. Its handling of this data is governed by its own privacy policy:
All app data is stored locally on your device. We do not retain a copy. Your device's own operating-system backup (iCloud on iOS, Auto Backup on Android) may include your Verso library as part of your personal, account-encrypted device backup, so a reinstall or a new device can restore it. That backup is controlled entirely by your device settings, and we never receive it. To delete your data, delete it within the app or uninstall the app. Backups you have exported remain wherever you saved them until you delete them yourself.
The app does not collect personal information and is not directed at children. It contains no ads, no social features, and no user-generated content shared with others. Its one optional in-app purchase, Verso Pro, is described above and requires no account or subscription.
Because the app does not collect or store your personal data on any server we operate, there is no personal data held by us to access, correct, export, or delete. Your data lives on your device and is yours to manage and remove at any time. Requests that ISBN or title text be sent to the third-party catalog services are initiated by you each time you scan or search; you can avoid them by not performing a lookup. Under the EU/UK GDPR, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA/CPRA), and comparable laws, you retain your rights over your personal data; because we do not collect or sell personal data and operate no server, there is no data sale and no developer-held data set to act on. If you have questions about how the app handles data, contact us using the details below.
We may update this policy. The current version is always available at https://versobooks.github.io/verso-legal/. Material changes will be reflected in the "Last updated" date above.
